A brand new gallery for the area, Hull International Photography (HIP) Gallery opens in Hull’s Princes Quay Shopping Centre on Friday 5th December at 6.30pm with an exhibition by international photographer Fred Trobrillant. Fred’s stand out work spontaneously captures his surroundings. He lives in Montpellier, France, but his photography has taken him far and wide.
The public are invited to the launch of the HIP Gallery from 6.00 pm for official opening by the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull, Councillor Mary Glew at 6.30pm on the Upper Deck of Hull’s Princes Quay Shopping Centre, HU1 2PQ. The launch event will close at 8.30pm. The exhibition will then be open every afternoon till Jan 30th, it is free of charge and parking in Princes Quay car park is £1 after 6pm.
Darren Squires, Creative Director explained, “We are delighted to launch the gallery with Fred Trobrillant’s outstanding work. He was first recommended to us by a friend and colleague who works for Arte, the Franco-German arts TV channel. Fred has the ability to recognise and capture a moment that would have passed, before most of us had managed to get a camera up to our faces.”
The evening will also introduce The Changing Face of Hull project. Offering a chance to participate in a photography workshop and portrait sitting at the opening of HIP. Come along in clothes that have meaning for you and bring along significant objects.
Music will come from nextdoor in POP with Edina Molnar singing her French repertoire.
Photography enthusiasts of all ages are expected to visit the gallery which will host high quality international photography exhibitions in an accessible space in the city centre. There will also be on going opportunities for local photographers to use the gallery’s resources –both digital and dark room – to develop their photography skills. Following the success of the first Hull International Photography Festival, HIP Fest, in June this year, HIP Gallery will be a year round base to view and enjoy photography. Hull based Festival Sponsors G. F Smith have been instrumental in developing the gallery and with their support, next year’s HIP Fest has already gained international interest and will take place in October 2015. G. F Smith have been providing the creative world with inspiration since 1885 and have a high regard for the local photography community.
Alan Raw , Chief Executive Officer of the Creative and Cultural Company explained, “It was clear from the success of HIP Fest 2014 that Hull appreciates the art of photography. Now the HIP Gallery will be the place to access world class works and get involved in photography all year round.”
