Hull International Photography (HIP) has a dedicated site at:
HIP was opened in Hull’s Princes Quay Shopping Centre in 2014 by the Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull, Councillor Mary Glew. With an exhibition by international Leica photographer Fred Trobrillant. Fred’s stand out work spontaneously captures his surroundings. He lives in Montpellier, France, but his photography has taken him far and wide.
Since then the public have been invited to the successful, well attended launches of new international exhibitions every 2 months. The exhibitions are open every afternoon free of charge. The HIP Gallery Patron is Matt Finn and the Curator is Alan Raw.
Photography enthusiasts of all ages visit the gallery which hosts high quality international photography exhibitions in an accessible space in the city centre. There are also on-going opportunities for local photographers to use the gallery’s resources, both studio and dark room – to develop their photography skills. Following the success of the first Hull International Photography Festival, HIPfest2014, HIP Gallery has been a year round base to view and enjoy photography and participate in HIPclub..a photography club for 8 to 180 year olds. Hull based Festival Sponsors G. F Smith have been instrumental in developing the gallery and with their support, HIP PhotographyFestival has already gained international interest and will take place for the 4th time in October 2017, sharing the Quay location with the Turner Prize.
Alan Raw, Chief Executive Officer of the Creative and Cultural Company explained, “It was clear from the success of our opening exhibition in 2014 that Hull appreciates the art of photography. Now the HIP Gallery is the place to access world class works and get involved in photography all year round.”
HIP is a project of The Creative & Cultural Company supported by G. F. Smith, yesyesBD, Princes Quay and East Street Arts.
HIP Club started January 10th 2015 with a pre-teens session every Saturday 10.30 – 12.
Lessons, activities and fun for young Photographers to get involved. Only £3 per session in the C&C Studio space next to the HIP Gallery. We then started an older version for adults of all ages to join the fun and it’s going strong. HIPclub is supported by FUJI, G.F.Smith, yesyesBD, Jessops & Lomography
