Photography as
Emotional Expression

Every photograph should have a little piece of the photographer in it. Photography as an art should be about passion, passion for your subject and passion for the process. Emotion is at the centre of this, emotion that the photographer puts into it and the emotion that the viewer feels – the two may not be same thing but that doesn’t matter.

Self-portraiture in photography is as old as photography itself. It’s not about randomly making selfies but is an artform in its own right and can allow the artist to have complete control over the scene they are presenting. It has been done by many famous photographers for lots of different reasons – it can be autobiographical, a voyage into the photographers inner psyche, or to explore a specific set of emotions. Other photographers use the self portrait to make comments on societal roles.

In this talk Claire will discuss her latest 365 project and about how emotion is at the centre of this and using the project to tell a personal story.

Street photography requires a unique blend of initiative, observation, confidence and skill. To be able to do this, basic knowledge is necessary, but practice is best.

About Ami:

Ami is an Indonesian living in Scotland. Her passion for Street photography started in 2010 and since then she goes out, practises and spend time outdoor for my own curiosity. She is a self-taught photographer, learning a lot through mistakes and experiments on the street. Bad weather doesn’t stop her going out taking photos, she sees that as a challenge.

In the practical session we will have a beautiful child model, where you can practice and develop your newly learnt skills.

Key Learning Points:

An introduction to Saraya, her career and images.
An in depth look at some of my most recent projects, and a detailed description of how I approach my location portraits.
Particular attention paid to, location spotting, looking for the light, correct lenses and camera settings to use, in a variety of different scenarios
Hands on, on local shoot to practice new skills and explore the various techniques that I use to create my portraiture.

About Saraya

Saraya Cortaville is an award-winning portrait and social documentary photographer. She has received two fellowships (one of only two women in the U.K to have achieved this)

The first for studio portraiture and most recently social documentary for a project she completed in 2015 whilst living in Africa. She was awarded the Peter Grugeon award for the best fellowship portfolio of 2015, and a gold award in Visual Arts in the professional photography awards 2016.

She skillfully manages to draw out her subjects’ emotions and feelings, in a sensitive and empathetic nature, her portraits are an observation and moment of connection, between two people, rather than photographer, subject.

“I didn’t want to be a photographer”

A talk about Sarah’s journey to becoming a story teller from a photographer. She will talk about how she uses photography to connect with other people to tell their stories, and how I am able to get a connection from real people through psychology and body language.

About Sarah:

Sarah has been a photographer for 15 years and started her wedding photography business 10 years ago. 5 years ago, Red Shoe was born, a female photography studio based in Chester. Women come from across the UK to become a Red Shoe Girl. This experience has helped change lives, as when a woman truly sees herself and embraces her own journey she knows she has the power to do anything.

Her journey is now heading towards becoming a speaker for men’s mental health after losing her beautiful fiancé to this illness last September. When she is asked how long she has been working in mental health… she would say the past 5 years. She believes that photography is 90% psychology and 10% mechanical.

Sarah believes the portrait to be an incredible powerful tool in helping people.

Tom Stoddart – “Every Picture Tells A Story”

Come and listen to one of worlds most respected photojournalists talk about his 49 years in the industry. This will be an exciting and fascinating insight into a career that began when Fleet Street was still at its height, through his coverage of many of the worlds’ major wars, disasters and political events through to his current work much closer to home in the North East.

About Tom:

Tom Stoddart began his photographic career on a local newspaper in his native North-East of England. In 1978 he moved to London to work as a staff photographer in Fleet Street and later freelanced for publications such as the Sunday Times and Time Magazine.

During a long and varied career he has witnessed such international events as the war in Lebanon, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the election of President Nelson Mandela, the bloody siege of Sarajevo, the wars against Saddam Hussein in Iraq.

In 1997 Tony Blair gave Stoddart exclusive behind the scenes access to his election campaign as the Labour Party swept to victory after 18 years of Conservative government in the United Kingdom.

Over the years Tom has worked with charities and NGO’s such as Medecins Sans Frontieres, Oxfam, Christian Aid, Care International and Sightsavers. His extensive work on the catastrophic AIDS pandemic blighting Africa has been widely published and exhibited.

His photography has been honoured with awards from World Press Photo, Visa pour l’image, Pictures Of The Year and the Eddie Adams Workshop. In 2006 he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society.

In 2012 his ‘Perspectives’ retrospective outdoor exhibition was displayed at London’s South Bank and attracted 225,000 visitors.

Now established as one of the worlds most respected photojournalists, Stoddart is represented by, and works closely with Getty Reportage, to produce powerful photo-essays on the serious world issues of our time.

Sean gives a frank telling of his own journey with photography, taking an especially deep dive into the point where his focus switched from learning techniques and obsessing over gear, to being driven to find better stories to tell. If you’ve spent hours watching YouTube tutorials, and thousands of pounds on new gear, but you’re still feeling stuck and frustrated, this might be the shift in focus you need to take your photography on to the next stage of the journey.

About Sean Tucker:

Sean is a Photographer and Filmmaker who runs a successful freelance business and a growing online presence where he seeks to inspire like-minded creatives coming up the ladder behind. His YouTube channel in particular has grown to over 100k subscribers with over 2.5 million views, and he has an Instagram following of over 50k followers. Sean creates a vibrant and positive community online which talks about how to pursue your dream of making the thing you love to do, the thing you get paid for.

Sean has a strong emphasis in all his video and speaking on being authentic and self-aware in your work, because, in a world of reality TV and vlogging, people are now hyper-aware of artifice, and can smell a sale pitch a mile away. To build an audience now takes honesty, integrity and vulnerability, and these are by words which Sean not only practices in his own work but preaches to other others as well.

“If you are easily offended, then please gather round!”

With over 400 weddings under his belt, Lee has photographed all kinds of people, from all kinds of backgrounds!

The one thing that has given him confidence, is his honesty with his clients, those within the industry, but above all with himself! In this mad world of political correctness, his talk will be a celebration of frank speaking and learning that your USP is simply a celebration of yourself. Your clients will be attracted to the real you, not the hipster you’re trying to be.

About Lee:

In Lee’s Religious Studies school report, it said “Lee has faith, but charity is needed when marking his work!” This quote pretty much sums up his childhood education experience.

From the age of 16, he entered the print trade and after passing his three year apprenticeship in reprographics and origination, he went onto creating artwork for many different applications including magazines, packaging, labels and commercial print. That industry gave him an eye for detail and more importantly an eye for what is commercially required – “What Looks Good”. His images and reputation are his qualifications, Lee has always been humble with his talent, because he believes the moment he thinks he is the finished article, then it’s time to give up!

He loves all the different kinds of personalities he meets through his wedding photography from the barking mad to the painfully shy and even the grumpy ones. If he wasn’t a wedding photographer he would love to be a psychologist as people’s minds are intriguing, but this may be because he is nosey too.

“Life in the Music Pit”

Warren talks about how he started and his journey through photography and what led him to doing what he does now. Warren describes what it’s like being a Live Music Photographer, how to get started in Music Photography, how to apply and get press/photo accreditation and hints and tips on how to get great live music images with examples of his own work.

About Warren:

Born in Widnes, Cheshire Warren has a vast photographic background. His love of photography started as a teenager back in the mid70’s. In his working life, he spent over 20 years as a Police Photographer with Cheshire, Gloucestershire, Lancashire and British Transport Police. He has photographed many things most people would never see in a lifetime. He left the police in 2006 and started working freelance and for a couple of years had his own studio in Widnes.

Now he is mainly seen photographing live music, festivals and gigs and due to his residency at his local music venue “The Studio” has made some great contacts and friends on the local music scene. He is also on the photographic team at “Getintothis” a Liverpool Music Web magazine and blog. He has shot artists such as Van Morrison, Blink 182, The Happy Mondays, The Libertines, Erasure, Billy Ocean, The Human League and has covered festivals such as Africa Oye, Liverpool International Music festival, Liverpool Sound City and Creamfields.

He runs classes in photography for the young people at “The Studio” and has had solo exhibitions both at “The Studio” and “The Catalyst” Museum in his local town Widnes. He has also held three sold out Gig Photography workshops with Fujiholics.

Although he is now only a part time photographer his love of what he does has grown. He has been shooting with Fujifilm X series cameras for a many years now.

He loves the family feel and the renewed enthusiasm Fujifilm has brought to his work.

Street Workshop/Walk

Spend 2 hours with Ami exploring the streets, with her to guide you and build your confidence, and of course having fun.

During the walk Ami will help guide you on

* What to look for on the street.
* How to approach your subject.
* How to find the right spot.

Street photography requires a unique blend of initiative, observation, confidence and skill. To be able to do this, basic knowledge is necessary, but practice is best.

REMEMBER YOUR CAMERA, MEMORY CARD AND FULLY CHARGED BATTERIES.

About Ami:

Ami is an Indonesian living in Scotland. Her passion for Street photography started in 2010 and since then she goes out, practises and spend time outdoor for my own curiosity. She believes everyone has ability to take street photography but there are some key skills that people don’t always have which are being passionate in photography, willing to learn and believing in yourself.

She is a self-taught photographer, learning a lot through mistakes and experiments on the street. Bad weather doesn’t stop her going out taking photos, she sees that as a challenge.

Since 2017 she has been running Street Photography workshops, mostly in Edinburgh and Glasgow and most recently in York. She loves to teach street photography, especially seeing her attendees gaining confidence and falling in love with what they do.

A pinch of creativity, a dash of lighting mixed together with some motorcycles…. An insight into motorcycle photography.

Michelle will discuss how a shoot works for her from start to finish. The planning, creativity and ideas, the shoot and the final images. The talk will include a few detailed behind the scenes illustrations and will discuss different lighting ideas and how important light is to create the image you have in your mind. How to think out the box when considering your ideas and how to keep that creativity going.

Michelle will talk from the heart about her work, her passions with the industry and the ups and downs, including some tips to keep you moving forward.

About Michelle:
Michelle is a professional photographer, and Flash Centre Ambassador and has been photographing for 13 years , she now specialises in Motorcycle Photography.

She has been on quite a journey over the years, from starting a high street studio back in October 2009, then moving to bigger premises with staff in March 2011 (becoming a finalist in several business awards) and then on to making the leap to close the doors in 2014 to achieve a lifelong dream of living by the sea and make the transition from family portraiture (which she does still photograph for some of her life long clients) to motorcycles.

There have been many highs and lows on her journey, a never-ending learning curve and a lot of knowledge on the importance of having work life balance – even if your work is one of your passions. It’s important to Michelle to get this message across to other photographers and help them to believe in themselves, their work and keep them from losing their creativity.

Travel with Saraya Cortaville

A short walk with me through my travels over the last 3 years photographing some amazing characters whilst living in remote villages from Tanzania, Nepal, Nicaraugua and Costa Rica.

I will take you through my journey with working with various NGO’s, around the world, and how it not only dramatically changed my way of life, but also my way of shooting.

About Saraya:

Saraya Cortaville is an award-winning portrait and social documentary photographer. She has received two fellowships (one of only two women in the U.K to have achieved this)

The first for studio portraiture and most recently social documentary for a project she completed in 2015 whilst living in Africa. She was awarded the Peter Grugeon award for the best fellowship portfolio of 2015, and a gold award in Visual Arts in the professional photography awards 2016.

Saraya’s passion for travel and people has pushed her career in to a more adventurous phase and she has recently lived and worked abroad for various international NGO’s documenting social issues in countries as far as Tanzania, Nepal, Nicargua and Costa Rica. She skillfully manages to draw out her subjects’ emotions and feelings, in a sensitive and empathetic nature, her portraits are an observation and moment of connection, between two people, rather than photographer, subject.

When not abroad Saraya shoots primarily location portraiture specializing in children and documentary weddings.

Saraya is a Fujifilm Ambassador and actively mentors and judges for national and international photographic bodies.

Woodland Photography

In this talk Mark will talk about his approach to woodland photography – ranging from photographing single trees to larger arrangements. Concentrating on how to achieve atmospheric results. He will also be discussing how to apply split toning to certain images to maximise the mood inherent in the image.

About Mark:

Mark Littlejohn is a previous winner of the Take-a-View UK Landscape Photographer of the Year in 2014. Over the last few years eleven of his images have received Judges Commendations in the awards, along with two being highly commended and another image being runner up in the Classic View in 2015.

His work has been featured in a variety of national magazines and he has also written several articles in relation to landscape photography and his particular approach to it.

He prefers the less popular view and concentrates his efforts in the earlier part of the day. In the main he stays close to his home in Penrith situated midway between Ullswater and the Eden Valley. He sees little point in constantly travelling in search of exotic locations, when quite often a beautiful image can be just around the corner from your front door.
